Genre Research

Ruff diamondz fall under the new up and coming music genre in the UK- Urban/Underground. Individually, the three girls have very different styles, whilst Chronz (the rapper) remains predominantly grime and spoken word based, the other two Tika and Troy are more r&b; giving the group its more diverse and urban sound.

The urban underground scene has been up and coming for many years now but it has seen its fastest growing success in the last couple of years. With Artists such as Tinie Tempah and N-Dubz making impressive movements with huge US artist and collabarating with some of the most well known producers and production companies in Hip Hop and R&B. Before such artists and such collaborations, the UK Urban scene remained underground and was only played via pirate radio stations or at budget grime clubs.

Tinie Tempah being one of the UKs biggest Underground Urban artists began making music in his bedroom at the age of 15. With a less polished sound, Tinie was then only appreciated by the heavy followers of underground music, which at this point was 'grime' as his career continued upwards and onwards, Tinie went from strength to strength after the release of this collabiration with Flukes - Wifey; This took Tinie onto another level and allowed him to be promoted by the UKs leading underground music channel- Channel U. Thereafter teaming up with Cleo Sol to create 'tears' in late 2008. A few years later, Tinie stormed back with 'pass out' ft. Labrinth which took him straight onto the mainstream table of Urban acts and ditched the Underground title. Generally, this is the pattern that most succesful underground urban artists tend to follow.

The connotations of Underground Urban music surround the ideoloy of the come uppance of the artist, the whole 'underdog is on top' story. Underground music isnt about the sound 100 of the time- it is often also about the background of the artist, in general the Underground music scene isnt flooded with BRIT school graduates or X factor winners of even desirabe contestants, its about the Artists who work their way up from the bottom to the top without the aid of competitions or fancy musical educations. People would associate Underground artists with the idea of the 'Hustle' and being economically unwell. Stereotypically, Underground artists are presented as these less economically well off, uneducated, 'gangster/road' type however this clearly isnt always the case however- this is the stereotypical view 8/10 times.

The target audience is those who can relate, among the Urban Underground scene this is usually people who listen to music of the same calibre- so, those who are highly influenced by hip hop and R&B and then also people of similar backgrounds, with similar fashion influences and similar dreams/desires.

The Urban Underground scene is still breaking out of its prime, therefore the mass following are teenagers- generally. However, those who have followed and supported underground music in london/England since is began will be in their early twentys and will be able to relate back to the pirate radio and mixtape days in the early naughties.

In comparison to more developed Genres i.e US Hip Hop, the UK Underground scene, like i've said, is still in its absolute prime. but with the come uppance of artists such as Tinie Tempah, N-Dubz, Skepta and Jessie J who knows where it could end up?

Second Advertisment research

This front page advert for Destiny's Child back when they were about to release their 'survivor' album.
The rolling stones was a big platform for their promotion as it is a fully established and high commended magazine in the music industry.
The band is styled with a clear theme of their album which also aids the promotion of the album/single as lots of young girls will be interested in the way that their icons dress thus setting trends.
Prior to the release of this single- the group had come out with a number one single called bootylicious which has been cleverly used for new consumers to link them to that in the cover title 'booty camp'
The girls are stood in a typical girl band formation which is a long shot incorporating the whole outfits. It's quite a low angle, making the girls look taller and having them look down on the camera which gives a sense of power.
This then ties in with the strong themes of the 90's when 'girl power' was all the rage.

Music Video Analysis - Spice Girls - Wannabe

In the spice girls wannabe video you can see that the director has stuck to many of godwins theories.
Godwins theory includes the idea of genre characteristics, in this particular music video this is shown through the spice girls in a number of ways.
this image shows the spice girls performing a choreographed routine. There are only a couple of shots where the Spice Girls perform a choreographed routine as the band as whole because theyre target audience (young / teenaged girls) where not represented in this way at the time of the music video release (1996).
In the early 90s the slogan of girl bands and female pop artists was 'Girl Power' this was the second stage of the upprisal of women in Britain. the aim of pop women getting behind 'Girl Power' was to eliminate the exclusivism of the sexes thus having very few heavily genre characteristics noticable in this music video.

this is secondly backed up by the way in which the Spice Girls are dressed. all over the world, girlbands were being dressed highly provocatively with matching/similar very feminie outfits in their music videos to tie in with godwins theory of the voyeristic view of the female body, presenting them on a very sexual platform, i.e Destinys Child and 3LW.
The spice girls however, where bought onto the scene with a different approach. All of the different spice girls where marketed cleverly to fit into a different social group opening their market- this also meant that in all of their music videos they were styled differently opening them up to a mass market of all types of females all over the world. The Spice Girls where conventionally and famously styled individually, on a whole- not a single one of them where presented in a sexual way and the spice girls where never put on a sexual platform in terms or marketing them as a group, these are how the group where styled conventionally :-

Scary Spice - leopard, african, aztec prints and block colours
Posh Spice - typical Chanel inspired monochrome dresses and stilletoes
Ginger Spice - outrovert, edgey, one off peices. bold colours, studds and sparkels
Baby Spice - pig tails, white dresses
Sporty Spice - tracksuits, trainers and hoodies

Godwin also identified the clear link between lyrics and visuals. The main theme in the song 'Wannabe' is loyalty and friendship. Throughout the video the girls are seen sticking together and acting as a tight unit through a regal party which they have crashed.
'if you wannabe my lover, you gotta get with my friends' this hook is always couple with the imagery of the girls in a group as a whole like i said earlier, this doesn't happen very often- it is quite a free spirited video to reflect the attitudes of young girls in this time period.

Other than the hook there are not many shots where the girl band come together as a collective. This suggests the come uppance and individuality of girls of the time period.

There are absolutely no jump cuts or clear cuts in this music video- however there are many very smooth and brilliantly executed invisible cuts to make the camera seem as if it is continually rolling. This ties in with Godwins theory of the notion of looking as the camera is used in a handy cam sort of way to seem asif its someone following them through the perspective of one of their friends. this ties in with the themes of frienship and loyalty and sticking together.
