Jennifer Lopez - Papi (2011)

Lopez has just released the sequel to her latest hit 'I'm into you' which sampled part of the track 'papi' with a clear continual in the narrative in the pop videos.

The song entitled 'papi' sees Jennifer Lopez find some luck in love after the heartbreak narrative of the previous song. In the beginning of the narrative, Jennifer is fed a cookie which a mysterious lady leads her to believe will find her some luck in love again. After this, the direction of the video puts Jennifer Lopez on a sexual pedestal and see's men lusting all over her for the entire duration of the video. From beginning to end, she is the main focus of the shot and all extra's involved are men diving, and falling head over heels for her-which differs from the story line of the actual lyrics.

Interestingly, the hook of the song 'move your body, dance for your papi' is all about being faithful to your one man who deserves everything you have got to give to him-however, like I explained the video differs in this.

I found the contrast in the lyrics of the song and the direct imagery from the video itself extremely intriguing as the news broke prior to the release of this video that she had split from her husband. Could the personal life of the artist have a very heavy influence on the direction of the music video released immediately after the split? Could jennifer Lopez being lusted over reflect a spiteful hit back at her ex husband? It seems that Jennifer Lopez being lusted over in such a way is her way of saying to her husband that shes still the strong and desirable woman she always was, even without him.

Target audience wise, I think that this video will appeal to the envious, younger generation. Jennifer Lopez is painted in an angelic way in the video as somebody that everybody wants to get with, sort of like the 'it' girl which is usually the big admiration and aspiration of the young and stereotypical aimless female youth of today.

The music video uses a strong narrative, which isn't discrete. There is clearly a story being told which is obvious to the viewer because there are subtitles like 'the next morning' 'later that day' These make it clearer to the untrained eye that there is a story being told as there is a clear and chronological order in which the story is being told and should be followed.

Towards the end of the music video there is a very clear performance element where there are hundreds of men surrounding jennifer Lopez and backing her up as she sings the lyrics of her song with a very clear objective of performing her song. At this point, there is a very strong routine performed as Jennifer Lopez is quite renound for her dancing ability, I don't think as an artist she will ever go a music video without a very choreographed routine with back up dancers.

In terms of selling the artist, Jennifer Lopez is sold mainly through her dancing abilities and her strong performances. People will watch her music videos time and time over to see her bang out these routines that have made her famous. Her tours will be sold out of people who will want to see her dance. An artist like Adele, you don't go to their concert for a fast paced, action packed dance off-you go purely out appreciation for her voice whereas an artist like Jennifer Lopez has a large fan base of dancers.
